SANTAL HUL
The Santal Hul of 1855 was one of the largest rebellions against colonial rule before the Indian independence movement. Led by the brothers Sidhu and Kanhu, thousands of Santals rose against exploitation by landlords, moneylenders, and colonial authorities, fighting with bows and arrows against the Bengal Army's muskets. Though the uprising was eventually crushed, the Hul left a lasting legacy of courage, resistance, and sacrifice. More than a century and a half later, it remains a defining chapter in Santal history, remembered through songs, stories, and collective memory.
