As philosopher Elvis Imafidon argues, this relational understanding of reality produces a community-centred ethics placing equal value on human and non-human aspects of existence alike. AFRICA

What if the Western idea of the independent, self-defining individual is fundamentally mistaken? Many African philosophies like Ubuntu argue that things don't exist in isolation and then connect. Instead, all things become what they are through their relations with other things.

𝐄𝐚đŦ𝐭𝐞đĢđĸ𝐧𝐞 𝐊đĸđĢ𝐞’s 𝐒𝐤𝐲 𝐈đŦ 𝐌𝐲 𝐅𝐚𝐭𝐡𝐞đĢ - the Naga resistance to colonial rule - 2026

is a compelling historical novel set in the Angami Naga village of Khonoma during a period when British colonial expansion began reshaping Naga society. Through a richly woven narrative, the book portrays the Naga resistance to colonial rule, the vibrancy of community life and oral traditions, and the tensions between tradition and modernity. It also offers a nuanced account of the cultural and religious transformations that accompanied this era of change. Written from an indigenous perspective, the novel documents the history, worldview, and cultural practices of the Angami Nagas with remarkable authenticity and sensitivity. I strongly recommend this book as a must-read for anyone seeking a deeper understanding of Northeast India and its people.

Land and Peoples of Southeast Asia—Southeast Asia - SOME BOOKS 2026

The
is a region shaped by the intimate relationship between land and people. Forged by the meeting of the Indian and Pacific tectonic plates, its diverse geography—mountains, river valleys, peninsulas, and vast island chains—has profoundly influenced the development of its societies and civilizations. Rivers served as lifelines for settlement, agriculture, trade, and political power, while mountains, forests, and seas created natural boundaries that fostered both cultural diversity and local distinctiveness. Yet despite differences in language, customs, and historical experience, the peoples of Southeast Asia share common traits born from their adaptation to a landscape defined by the constant interplay of land and water. From the fertile plains of Angkor and the Red River Delta to the maritime networks of the Indonesian archipelago, Southeast Asia’s history is ultimately a story of how geography shaped human movement, livelihoods, and the emergence of a richly varied but interconnected cultural world.

THE TRANSPACIFIC CHINESE DIASPORA-MIGRATION NETWORK FROM CHINA TO CANADA & BEYOND - 2026

In The Transpacific Chinese Diaspora, Zhongping Chen examines the origins, rise, and reform of the Cantonese-dominated Chinese diaspora in Canada between 1788 and 1898. https://ow.ly/hK9M50Z6oNm "This extremely important work completely remakes our understandings of the first century of the Chinese migrations to Canada, carefully tracing the diasporic connections of the merchant networks in Guangdong, Hong Kong, San Francisco, and British Columbia that organized, ordered, and enabled this migration. A superb piece of historical scholarship." —Timothy J. Stanley, University of Ottawa #ReadUP #history #asianamericanstudies #asianhistory

The Fall of Republics by Thomas F. Madden

What caused the world’s great republics to fall—and what their fate reveals about the dangers facing modern democracies today.
is now available (4 August UK pub). Find it here: https://hubs.ly/Q04kzKYt0 In this timely book, distinguished historian Thomas Madden explores the people, events, and factors that led to the collapse of some of the world’s most enduring republics—from Carthage to Rome to Venice and beyond—and examines the worrying lessons these failures hold for the United States and other democracies today. The Fall of Republics not only tells the story of fallen states but also opens a window into how modern democratic republics were built on the ashes of the old. From Machiavelli to John Adams, philosophers and statesmen applied the lessons of lost republics to forge new ones that they hoped would be inoculated against the calamities that brought down their predecessors. The book reveals that republics thrive because they pit interests and powers against each other, balancing them across government branches to ensure stability and avoid tyranny. Republics are strengthened by adversity, which unites citizens despite their differences, and weakened by prosperity and security, which breeds division and partisan strife. With their eyes on the ancient world, America’s founders built important safeguards into the Constitution—but those safeguards are being tested today as the United States accumulates historical hallmarks of broken republics, from political violence to the politicization of the courts. The Fall of Republics offers valuable lessons and insights about what threatens republics—and what’s needed to keep them alive.

THE DHARMA OF JUSTICE IN SANSKRIT EPICS DEBATES ON GENEDRE VARNA SPECIES BY RUTH VANITA OXFORD - 2026

In this book, I show how in the Mahabharata, there are teachers of dharma from all four varnas. Sanjaya the charioteer, a manual worker classified as a shudra, plays a pivotal role. He instructs the king about the geography of India and instructs him on dharma. In the Gita, he is the parallel to Krishna as the external charioteer or guide, and as eternal witness (sākášŖi), the inner self. He is the only one apart from Arjuna who sees the divine universal form. The Gita concludes with his beautiful expression of rapture as he remembers this vision. The orality theory of everything - Derek Thompson - 2026

Mass literacy restructured our consciousness, and now the rise of social media is again transforming what it feels like to be a thinking person, Derek Thompson argues. https://theatln.tc/PcAKPyxO This idea can be characterized by
, which emerged from the work of mid-20th-century media theorists, especially Walter Ong and Marshall McLuhan. “They argued that the invention of the alphabet and the rise of literacy were among the most important events in human history,” Thompson writes. These developments moved communications from an age of orality—in which all information was spoken, and all learning was social—to an age of literacy, in which writing could fix words in place, and develop ever more complicated ideas that would have been impossible to memorize. “The age of orality was an age of social storytelling and flexible cultural memory. The age of literacy made possible a set of abstract systems of thought—calculus, physics, advanced biology, quantum mechanics—that form the basis of all modern technology,” Thompson writes. Now the current demise of literate culture—exemplified by the growing prevalence of social media and decline in reading—may be signaling a return to orality that is once again transforming the human experience, he argues. At the link, read Thompson’s discussion with Bloomberg’s Joe Weisenthal about how the concepts of orality and literacy are shaping nearly everything we know.

Homes without Windows - Chandu Maheria -2026

Reading Homes without Windows, I frequently experienced flashes of deja vu. Although unlike
, I grew up in a village setting in Maharashtra, the experiences of Dalits are essentially not very dissimilar. In addition, I was well acquainted with places and most people that figure in the book. It evoked memories of my own encounters with caste and communal violence in Gujarat. One episode returned vividly to mind: during the anti-reservation riots of 1981, while I was a student at IIM Ahmedabad, I found myself trapped by a mob in Bapunagar. The IIM campus was an elitist island that remained insulated even when the city around it burned. Yet the social activist in me often ventured into working-class neighbourhoods to understand events first hand. I had befriended several Dalit activists across Ahmedabad and regularly attended their meetings. One afternoon, in the thick of the riots, riding my Vijay scooter towards the Buddha Vihar in Bapunagar, I was stopped by half a dozen men armed with sticks and wearing the ferocious expressions of a riotous mob. When I told them where I was headed, they began manhandling me and seized my scooter. For a few moments, I genuinely thought I might become the next day’s newspaper headline. Suddenly, however, a group of 15 to 20 Dalit youths, blue scarves tied around their foreheads, emerged from a nearby basti. The attackers quickly dispersed, and I was saved. Read more on thewire.

The Birth of Indian Liberalism : Mama Parmanand’s Letters to an Indian Raja by Rahul Sagar - 2026

First published in 1891, Letters to an Indian Raja is the earliest work of political theory written and published in modern India. Addressed to the rulers of the Native States, it argued – radically for its time – that constitutional government, individual liberty, and social reform were not foreign impositions but essential to India’s moral and political regeneration. Its author, Narayan Mahadev Parmanand, a reclusive yet influential thinker revered by his contemporaries as a “political rishi”, envisioned enlightened monarchs as agents who could free individuals from the grip of custom, hierarchy, and community – as well as both colonial domination and princely despotism. Long forgotten, Letters to an Indian Raja overturns the assumption that Indian liberalism was merely derivative or conciliatory. It reveals instead a confident, original tradition of liberal thought rooted in Indian conditions and aimed at making the Native States models of reform that could challenge the legitimacy of British rule itself. That this ambition was eclipsed by the rise of mass nationalism explains why the book slipped from view – despite once being widely read by princes, administrators, and reformers. In this landmark volume, political theorist Rahul Sagar restores Letters to an Indian Raja to its rightful place in intellectual history. His incisive introduction reconstructs Parmanand’s life, ideas, and political world, and shows why scholars have long been looking in the wrong place for the origins of Indian liberalism. Together, text and interpretation reframe the history of Indian liberalism, revealing it not as an echo of British ideas, but as an indigenous political project with its own ambitions and horizons. @juggernaut.in

Shaan Kashyap . WHO OWNS THE PAST. 2026

History researchers in their early years of learning the craft, rarely dare to venture out for grand sweeps.
does. History text books are written and rewritten when historians and governments collaborate. Looking at writing history text books, its a study at the interface between government establishments, ideology and knowledge production from the late 19th century to the 2020s in India. Ambitious in scope, sweeping in approach. Relevant. Lucidly written. An attempt to address both non-academic and academic readers. Looking forward to indulge. Many congratulations Shaan! Wonderful achievement! This is your first. Many more to come.

“The cranes of Balaka continue their flight across philosophical borders.” -RABINDRANATH TAGORE - BALAKA - 2026

What if motion itself is the deepest form of freedom? In Balaka, Rabindranath Tagore reimagines existence not as fixed identity but as continuous becoming. Written at a moment when empire, war, and industrial modernity were reshaping the world, the poems open a space where time flows, selves dissolve, and meaning is never still. Rather than treating movement as metaphor, Tagore builds a philosophy of motion. Birds, rivers, winds, and stars become part of a single unfolding reality where being is inseparable from becoming. Drawing on both Indic thought and European philosophy, *Balaka* resists fixed categories of identity, history, and civilisation, offering instead a world seen in flux. SANTAL HUL

The Santal Hul of 1855 was one of the largest rebellions against colonial rule before the Indian independence movement. Led by the brothers Sidhu and Kanhu, thousands of Santals rose against exploitation by landlords, moneylenders, and colonial authorities, fighting with bows and arrows against the Bengal Army's muskets. Though the uprising was eventually crushed, the Hul left a lasting legacy of courage, resistance, and sacrifice. More than a century and a half later, it remains a defining chapter in Santal history, remembered through songs, stories, and collective memory. I, WANDERING JEW -- YAIR MINTZKER -- 2026

Combining history, detective story, and memoir, Yair Mintzker's I, Wandering Jew is a surprising and revealing account of the antisemitic myth of “the Wandering Jew." Now available worldwide! Find it here: https://hubs.ly/Q04j4RZV0 The story behind the mythical figure of “the Wandering Jew” is one of the most fascinating tales in European history. In I, Wandering Jew, National Jewish Book Award–winning historian Yair Mintzker traces the tale back to its source, follows its many metamorphoses through five centuries, and relates it to the fraught present moment. According to a mysterious pamphlet published in 1602, the Wandering Jew was a real person, named Ahasversus, who was cursed by Jesus to eternal wandering after refusing to help him as he was led to his crucifixion. For more than four hundred years, many otherwise reliable witnesses have claimed to have seen the Wandering Jew. Moving in reverse chronological order, I, Wandering Jew explores crucial episodes in the story of this figure. We meet an unforgettable, Wandering Jew–like character who appeared out of nowhere in Israel in the 1950s; a nineteenth-century novelist who was the first Jew to favorably describe the Wandering Jew; an eighteenth-century German scholar who saw the Wandering Jew emerging from a devastating fire; and the man who likely inspired the 1602 pamphlet. A work of history that reads like a detective story, I, Wandering Jew is also part memoir. As Mintzker discovers affinities between his own story and that of the Wandering Jew, the surprising history of an old antisemitic trope and its meanings becomes a profound meditation on home and exile, Judaism and Christianity, poetry and truth, the deep past and the present. #History
